Established in 1991 and recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, the park is renowned for its exceptional landscapes, biodiversity, and dramatic alpine scenery. Covering nearly 1,000 km², the park protects a significant portion of the Rwenzori Mountains, famously known as the “Mountains of the Moon.” The range is home to Africa’s third-highest peak, Mount Stanley’s Margherita Peak, as well as Mount Speke, Mount Baker, Mount Gessi, Mount Emin, and Mount Luigi da Savoia. The Rwenzori landscape is remarkably diverse, extending from lush montane forests and bamboo zones to high-altitude moorlands, glaciers, snowfields, waterfalls, and spectacular mountain lakes. Its unique vegetation includes giant lobelias, heathers, mosses, and other rare alpine plants that create an enchanting, otherworldly atmosphere. The park supports approximately 70 mammal species and more than 200 bird species, including several Albertine Rift endemics. Highlights Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is situated in the south western part of Uganda, on the boundary of the Albertine Rift Valley, at an elevation of between 1,160m and 2,607m asl. This is a genuine tropical rainforest, spread over a series of steep ridges and valleys. The park is part of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and it borders the Virunga National Park inthe Democratic Republic of Congo, contains both montane and lowland forest and is accessible only on foot. The Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site and it also boasts one of the richest ecosystems in Africa In the local language “bwindi”/“mubwindi” means “dark place”, referring to the impenetrable nature of the thick forest and this is where it derives its name from. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Reserve was first gazetted in 1942 and later on upgraded to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in 1992. In 1994, it was acknowledged as the World Heritage Site. What makes Bwindi Impenetrable is the fact that it covers an area of about 327 square kms of tangled plant life draped over a deep fissured landscape of steep, slippery valleys & high, draughty ridges. However if the terrain is far from easy to manage, it’s well worth the effort as a trek through one of Africa’s most ancient rainforests in search of the vulnerable mountain gorillaranks among one of the world’s premier wildlife encounters. The park is inhabited by a population of about 400 individual mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei), known as the Bwindi population, which makes up approximately 50% of the world’s population of mountain gorillas. A 2006 census of the mountain gorilla population in the park showed that its numbers had increased modestly from an estimated 300 individuals in 1997 to 320 individuals in 2002 to 340 individuals in 2006. Inside the park there are 11 species of primates which can be seen, including chimpanzee, L’Hoest’s monkey, red-tailed monkey, blue monkey, black and white colobus and the ubiquitous olive baboon. Additionally there are approximately 346 species of birds which can be seen, and Bwindi contains 90% of all Albertine Rift endemics which are very hard to experience in any other place in East Africa, along with approximately 200 species of butterflies. However, gorilla tracking is the park’s main tourist attraction and those wishing to track gorillas must first obtain a permit to do so. Selected gorillas families have been habituated to human presence and the number of visitors is tightly controlled to prevent degradation of the habitat and risks to the gorillas. Tourists can visit the park any time throughout the year, although conditions in the park are more difficult during the rainy seasons. Available tourist accommodations include lodges, tented camps, and cheaper options generally run by the local community, located near the Buhoma entrance gate. Access: Approximately a 6 hour drive from Kampala to Kabale and then Kabale to Buhoma Park Headquarters takes 3-4 hours; Kabale – Ruhija – Buhoma takes about 3 hours. The public does not use this road much and a 4-wheel drive vehicle is necessary. A bus leaves from Kampala to Butogota daily at circa 06:30 a.m. Otherwise you may travel by bus or matatu from Kampala to Kabale for circa Ush 12,000. From Kabale you can hire a car for about Ush 100,000, or take a pickup truck to Butogota. Public transport to Butogota is unpredictable, but most common on market days in Kabale. It is 18 kms from Butogota to Buhoma. Highlights Murchison Falls National Park is located in Masindi District in western Uganda and is situated approximately 300 kilometres (190 miles) northwest of Kampala, Uganda’s capital city. Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest national park, measuring approximately 3,840 square kilometres (1,480 sq mi). Also in the park, adjacent to the Masindi-Gulu Highway, are the Karuma Falls. The park is bisected by the Victoria Nile from east to west for a distance of about 115 kilometres (71 miles) and is home to the world-famous Murchison Falls, where the waters of the majestic Nile River squeeze through a narrow gorge, only 7 metres (23 feet) wide, before plunging 43 metres (141 feet) below. Unsurprisingly Murchison Falls National Park derives its name from the waterfall, the centerpiece of the park, and the final event in an 80km stretch of rapids. The mighty cascade drains the last of the river’s energy, transforming it into a broad, placid stream that flows quietly across the rift valley floor into Lake Albert. This stretch of river provides one of Uganda’s most remarkable wildlife spectacles. Regular visitors to the riverbanks include elephants, giraffes and buffaloes, while hippos, Nile crocodiles and aquatic birds are permanent residents. In Murchison it is possible to spot four of the “big five”, and buffalos, elephants, lions andleopards are best to be seen in the northern sector (above the Nile). Due to excessive hunting and poaching, Rhinos became extinct by 1983, but were re-introduced into Uganda in 2005 by Rhino Fund Uganda. White rhinos are now being bred again in the 7000ha Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, which is located 70 km south of the park; their mission is to reintroduce small herds of rhinos (around five at a time), whilst retaining a nucleus breeding herd in the sanctuary. Boat trips operate from Paraa to the foot of Murchison Falls and takes around 3 hours for a round trip. This is an extremely popular activity and it will enable you to see hippos, crocodiles and magnificent bird life close up. There are also nature walks to the top of the falls (sometimes not available in the wet seasons) and at Kaniyo Pabidi, where you can trek chimpanzees. Kampala to Paraa takes around 5 hours and a 4WD vehicle is recommended. The 1951 film “The African Queen” starring Humphrey Bogart was filmed on Lake Albert and the Nile in Murchison Falls National Park. Highlights Queen Elizabeth National Park Located in western Uganda, Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of the country’s most diverse and rewarding safari destinations. For any birder among you, this area supports the secretary bird and the black chested snake eagle to name a few. Return to your accommodation for lunch. After lunch you will head out for the launch/boat trip to the base of Murchison Falls where you will also be able to catch sight of more animals including Hippos and Crocodiles and several water birds. Continue with a hike (if you like) to the top of the falls. The hike may be a strenuous one but the thrill on reaching the top is breathtaking. Miss it only if you must. Return to your accommodation and have a relaxed evening. Dinner and Overnight at Pakuba Lodge Day 4: transfer From Murchison falls to Kibale National Park After breakfast at your accommodation, depart right away for Kibale Forest National Park. The drive is incredibly scenic, passing through villages, lush green countryside and hills dotted with tea plantations which characterize this part of Uganda. Kibale national park is popular for its primates like the chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, grey cheeked mangabeys and red tailed monkeys. On your chimpanzee trails, these are regularly seen swinging in the forest trees and others feeding on the wild fruits. You will reach and do little but check into your accommodation where you will have dinner and the overnight rest. Dinner and Overnight at Kibale Forest Camp. Day 5: Chimpanzee tracking and Bigodi Swamp Walk and Transfer to Queen Have an early breakfast and head to the rangers’ point where you will receive some briefing on the dos and don’ts during chimp trekking. Thereafter, you will proceed to the chimpanzee trek in the Kibale Forest. An experienced ranger guide will take you chimp tracking and you will be marveled by the sights of primates here. Once you locate the chimpanzees, you will have a full hour in their presence while you will be seeing them playing, patrolling, swinging in the tree branches, feeding, grooming young ones and others mating, prepare your camera for photos as you watch these amazing apes. You will return to the lodge for lunch after which you will head out for Queen Elizabeth National Park. You will arrive in the evening and overnight at your booked accommodation. Dinner and Overnight at Buffalo Safari Lodge. Day 6: Morning Game Drive and Boat Cruise along Kazinga Channel On this day be up early and have your breakfast. Proceed for a morning game drive to the Kasenyi plains and be on the look for: Lions, Elephants, Bush bucks, Cape Buffaloes, Defassa Waterbucks, Giant Forest Hogs, Uganda kob, among others. Return to your accommodation for some rest time and lunch. After lunch, you will go for a 2-hour boat trip on the Kazinga Channel which connects Lakes George and Edward and you will surely be fascinated by the concentrations of giant hippos, elephants and crocodiles among others. Dinner and Overnight at Buffalo Safari Lodge Day 7: Transfer to Bwindi with en route game viewing in the Ishasha Sector Have breakfast then set off for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park through the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park – famously known for its resident tree-climbing lions. The chance of spotting these lions is about 70% though sometimes they are really hard to spot (most especially when they’re down in the grassland looking for prey). Bwindi is a big habitat for mountain gorillas in Uganda (harboring an estimated 400 mountain gorillas – roughly half of the world’s population) including several habituated groups, which can be tracked. Dinner and Overnight at bakiga lodge Day 8: Gorilla Tracking and Talks Experience, transfer to Lake Bunyonyi for Relax After an early breakfast and a briefing by a ranger guide, you will enter the gorilla sanctuary for your adventure. The beauty of this rain forest is spectacular! The area offers dramatic steeply forested landscape and is incredibly dense, but crisscrossed by numerous animal trails allowing access to tourists. The time taken and the terrain vary with the movements of these great primates. Once you locate a gorilla group, you will be allowed an hour in their presence. Day 9: Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park with Game Viewing Have breakfast and set off to Lake Mburo NP. For less experienced hikers, we offer options to extend your trek, allowing more time to acclimatize and significantly reducing the risk of altitude sickness. Day 1: Transfer from your hotel in kasese to mihunga park gate (1615m) and Hike to Nyabitaba Hut (2651m) On this day after breakfast at 8:30am you will meet all the guides, potters, chefs and you will check on the hiking gears to ensure that you have received the equipment's of your size during the summiting day. After, your driver together with the guides will drive you to the Uganda wild life Authority headquarters/Rwenzori gate. The guide will introduce you to the park warden and receive an induction, briefing and registration before starting the trek. Thereafter, you will officially begin the hike by passing through farmland to the park boundary, which follows along the Mubuku River. You will cross the Mahoma tributary before starting a long steep ascent onto a giant ridge until you reach Nyabitaba Hut at 2651m. During this part of the trail you will pass in the grass land, Montana forest zone and heather which are tropical rain forests, on the right hand side you will see Portal peaks, you may be lucky enough to hear or see chimpanzees calls and to see Black and White Columbus monkeys, Blue monkeys, and the brilliant Rwenzori Turaco and see different chameleons, you will pass through different rivers and waterfalls until you reach Nyabitaba Camp. Hike duration: 5 -6 hours. Elevation height: 1,036m Day 2: Nyabitaba (2651m asl.) – John Matte Camp (3505m asl.) From Nyabitaba follow the trail that drops down through the forest to the Kurt Shafer Bridge, Just below the confluence of the Mubuku and Bujuku rivers. Passing through the bamboo forest, Traverse through a long and exhausting stretch of slippery moss-covered rock. From the Nyamuleju rock shelter, Mount Stanley and Mount Speke can be seen before passing into the Zone of the giant heather, lobelia and groundsel. Finally reach John Matte Hut after passing Through the tiring bog, for dinner and overnight at the hut. Hike duration: 7 – 8 hours. Elevation height: 854m Day 3: John Matte (3505m asl.) – Bujuku Camp (3962m asl.) From John Matte Hut, the trail drops down to cross the Bujuku River and enters Lower Bigo Bog, the home of giant lobelias. Jumping from tussock to tussock, the bog is finally crossed but rarely without the feet sampling some of the freezing ooze below. The upper Bigo bog gives way to Bujuku Lake , with views of Mt Baker to the South and Mt Stanley to the West. Bujuku Hut, well located in the shadow of Mount Baker and Mount Speke, is set in a narrow valley below Stuhlmann Pass. This camp is good for acclimatization for clients attempting the summits of peaks Mount Stanley and Mount Speke. Dinner and overnight at Bujuku hut. Hike duration: 4 – 5 hours. Elevation height: 457m Day 4: Bujuku (3962m asl.) – Elena Camp (4541m asl) Leaving Bujuku, the trail takes you through more bog, while climbing the steep slopes west of the lake and through the magical and forest of Groundsel Gully. Turn to your right up to Elena Hut and Mount Stanley on a steep trail over large boulders, while the trail on your left leads to Scott-Elliot Pass and down to Kitandara Lakes the trail on the left leads those who are not climbing Margherita Peak to Kitandara Hut. Those climbing the peak will have their Dinner and overnight at the coolly and Icy Elena Hut. Hike duration: 5 – 6 hours. Elevation height: 579m Day 5: Elena Hut (4541m asl.) – Margherita Peak (5109m asl.) – Kitandara Camp (4430m asl) Very early in the morning, you attempt climbing the highest peak, Margherita of Mount Stanley. To reach the summit of Margherita, the climb takes about 4 -5 hours depending on the weather conditions and the pace of climbing this mountain. This tough walk takes you over three glaciers, slippery rock, ice and very exposed areas which are open on many sides. Climbing on to the glaciers, cross the Stanley Plateau and proceed with the ascent Acclimatized to fog, altitude sickness and coolly weather, scramble up to the summit of Margherita the highest peak of the Rwenzori Mountains. Then Descend from Margherita peak back to Elena Hut will take you about 2 – 3hours. After your lunch at Elena hut, descend to the Scott-Elliot pass (4372m asl.), where there are spectacular views of Bujuku Lake and Mount Speke. After, the trail passes you through an alpine zone of sparse vegetation and rough boulders, descend, past the Kitandara Lakes. Dinner and overnight at the Kitandara camp. Descend duration: 3 – 4 hours. Day 6: Kitandara (4430m asl.) – Guy Yeoman (3261m asl) From Kitandara, take on the trail that ascends steeply up the headwall, spreading out from the base of Mount Baker and continuing along the south side of the mountain to Fresh field Pass 4282m asl. At this point you can view into the Congo to the west and Mount Stanley to the north. From the pass, take on the long high alpine mossy. Thereafter start the descend through steep rocky trails and the rock shelter at Bujongolo, the base camp for the historic expedition by the Duke of Abruzzi in 1906 and then an overnight at Guy yeoman camp. Hike duration: 6 – 7 hours. Day 7: Guy Yeoman (3261m asl.) – Nyabitaba (2651m asl.) – Mihunga Gate (1615m asl.) Below Guy Yeoman, the route descends the cliffs of Kichuchu. Beyond Kichuchu the muddy path crosses the Mubuku River twice through a bamboo forest before climbing downwards to Nyabitaba to complete the circuit. Continue descending Nyabitaba Camp and complete your Hike by the evening to park the gate to end your 7 days Rwenzori Margherita peak Trek.
